About the Procedure
Liposuction & Abdominoplasty with Muscle Repair
What is it?
Combination surgery involving liposuction for contouring, excision of excess abdominal skin (abdominoplasty), and plication (tightening) of the rectus abdominis muscles to correct diastasis (muscle separation) — often produces the most dramatic abdominal contour improvement.
Who is a candidate?
- Patients with excess abdominal skin, persistent fat, and rectus diastasis (commonly after pregnancy or major weight loss).
- Stable weight for several months and realistic expectations; non-smokers or willing to cease smoking pre-op.
When to choose combined procedure?
When skin laxity and muscle separation are present — liposuction alone will not correct loose skin or weakened abdominal wall. Combined procedure restores contour and function.
Comparison with liposuction alone
- Liposuction alone addresses fat but not excess skin or muscle laxity. Abdominoplasty corrects both skin and muscle with a larger incision and longer recovery but more definitive results.
Pre-op preparation & tests
- Full medical evaluation, blood tests, imaging if needed, smoking cessation, and DVT risk assessment.
- Discussion about scarring, drain use, compression, and staged procedures if applicable.
Day of surgery & expectations
Under general anaesthesia. Liposuction performed for flank/waist contouring, then lower abdominal incision, excision of redundant skin, plication of rectus muscles, repositioning of the umbilicus and closure. Drains often used and compression applied.
Benefits
- Flatter, firmer abdomen, improved waistline, correction of muscle separation and functional benefits (less back pain, improved core stability).
- Long-lasting results when weight is maintained.
Expected timeline
- Immediate: drains for several days, swelling and tightness; hospital stay 1–3 nights.
- 2–4 weeks: light activity; avoid heavy lifting 6–8 weeks.
- 3–6 months: swelling subsides and contour improves; final result by 6–12 months.
Post-op instructions
- Compression garment, drain care, DVT prophylaxis as prescribed, avoid strenuous activity for 6–8 weeks.
- Follow wound care, attend follow-up visits and start graded core-strengthening rehabilitation when cleared.
