About the Procedure
Blepharoplasty (Upper / Lower Eyelid Surgery)
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery to remove excess skin and fat and tighten muscles to rejuvenate the eyelids and, when necessary, improve superior visual fields affected by redundant skin.
Who is a candidate?
- Individuals with eyelid skin excess, puffiness from fat herniation, or functional obstruction of the upper visual field.
- Good general health and realistic expectations are required; ocular assessment may be indicated.
When to choose surgery?
Choose blepharoplasty when non-surgical treatments (skin tightening, fillers) cannot correct drooping skin or herniated fat, or when vision is compromised by excess upper eyelid skin.
Pre-op preparation & tests
- Ophthalmologic assessment including visual field if indicated, medical history review and medication adjustments (eg. anticoagulants).
- Pre-op photography and discussion of aesthetic goals.
Day of surgery — what to expect
Local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia; incisions placed in natural creases of the eyelids, excess skin/fat removed or repositioned, and fine sutures placed for precise closure. Most patients are day-cases.
Benefits
- More refreshed, youthful eyelid appearance and improved upper visual field in functional cases.
- Long-lasting results and minimal scarring hidden in natural creases.
Expected timeline
- First week: swelling/bruising peak and then begin to subside; sutures removed ~5–7 days.
- 2–4 weeks: most social activities can resume; residual swelling diminishes over 3 months.
- 3–6 months: final contour and scar maturation.
Post-op instructions
- Cold compresses and head elevation for first 48–72 hours; avoid heavy lifting and eye strain.
- Use prescribed eye drops/ointments; avoid contact lens use until advised.
- Follow-up with surgeon for wound checks and suture removal.
