About the Procedure
Dental Implants — Tooth Replacement with Long-Term Results
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are biocompatible titanium (or titanium-alloy/zirconia) posts surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. Once integrated, they support crowns, bridges or implant-retained dentures to restore chewing, speech and aesthetics.
Who is a candidate?
- Patients missing one or more teeth with adequate bone volume (or who can undergo bone grafting).
- Good oral hygiene and controlled systemic health (smoking and uncontrolled diabetes may affect outcomes).
- Patients seeking a fixed, long-lasting solution compared with removable dentures or tooth-supported bridges.
When to choose implants?
Choose implants to restore function and appearance when you want a permanent solution that preserves adjacent teeth (no shaving required for bridges) and maintains jawbone health by providing functional loading.
Comparison with other options
- Vs bridges: implants avoid altering adjacent healthy teeth and offer better long-term bone preservation.
- Vs removable dentures: implants provide superior stability, comfort and chewing efficiency; overdentures can be implant-retained for patients lacking full fixed options.
Pre-op assessment & tests
- Clinical dental exam, periodontal assessment and oral hygiene optimisation.
- Panoramic X-ray and CBCT (3D) imaging to evaluate bone volume, anatomy and planning for implant position.
- Medical history and blood tests if indicated; smoking cessation advice and antibiotic prophylaxis per protocol.
Treatment day & what to expect
Local anaesthesia ± sedation. Implant placed into prepared bone site; healing cap placed and site sutured. Immediate provisional tooth may be possible in selected cases; otherwise a healing period allows osseointegration before final crown placement.
How implants are placed (short)
Incision → osteotomy (drilling) into bone → implant insertion → closure with sutures. After 3–6 months of healing, an abutment and final prosthetic crown or bridge are attached.
Benefits
- Natural function and aesthetics — feel and act like natural teeth.
- Preservation of adjacent teeth and jawbone structure.
- High long-term success rates with appropriate maintenance.
Expected timeline & results
- Immediate: minor swelling and discomfort, soft diet for 24–48 hours.
- 3–6 months: osseointegration phase — avoid heavy loading until confirmed.
- After restoration: normal chewing function restored; maintenance with excellent oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
Post-op care & instructions
- Soft diet initially, gentle oral hygiene avoiding the surgical site; chlorhexidine mouthwash as advised.
- Avoid smoking and follow antibiotic/analgesic prescriptions; attend follow-up for suture removal and implant checks.
- Long-term maintenance with regular cleaning appointments and home care to prevent peri-implantitis.
